Nitrite is an undesired byproduct in cooling lubricants and are therefore regularly tested for nitrites. In natural and drinking water, nitrite can lead to infant mortality and dead aquatic life.

Nitrate is a byproduct of biological decay from plant and animal matter. High concentrations can be found in rural, farming areas where fertilisers are regularly used. Often different foods need to be tested for their nitrate content. Nitrate is often found in preservatives or present in food due to over-fertilisation. Excessive nitrate concentrations in food can have adverse effects on food quality and consumer health. Regular nitrate testing in the food industry is important. 

Additionally, farmers use this test to control nitrogen content in soil to estimate the amount of fertiliser needed.

In ponds and aquariums nitrate is often tested instead of ammonium to control the water quality.
