The water hardness depends mainly on the amount of calcium and magnesium salts within the water. The total sum of these salts determines the actual water hardness. Water is often simply classified as "soft" or "hard" water and generally, the following values apply to these terms:

• Below 50mg/L - very soft water
• 50 to 120mg/L - soft water
• 120 to 240mg/L - medium hard water
• 240 to 360mg/L - hard water
• above 360mg/L very hard water
